Cue the Record : LISTENING SESSION 030: Donald Byrd, Places and Spaces (1975)

LISTENING SESSION 030: Donald Byrd, Places and Spaces (1975)

Studio Contro

Sun, Sep 6 at 4:30 PM - 8:00 PM (EDT)

Presented by Dr. Bruce Campbell Jr. aka DJ Junior of Record Breakin’ Music (@recordbreakin / @drbcampbelljr) and Mustafa Ali-Smith (@mustafaalismith)

Released in 1975 on Blue Note Records, Places and Spaces marked a turning point in Donald Byrd’s career and in the evolution of jazz. A trumpeter rooted in the hard bop tradition, Byrd had already established himself among the greats of modern jazz before turning increasingly toward funk, soul, and rhythm-driven Black popular music. Produced by Larry Mizell and Fonce Mizell, the album brought together jazz musicianship with lush arrangements, electric instrumentation, and deep grooves, creating a sound that was both sophisticated and accessible.

Places and Spaces arrived as jazz was expanding beyond its traditional boundaries, and Byrd was at the center of that transformation. Rather than treating jazz, funk, and soul as separate worlds, he allowed them to speak to one another. The result was music that reflected the sounds of Black life in the mid-1970s while opening new possibilities for where jazz could go next. That evolution would also help introduce Byrd’s music to audiences far beyond the traditional jazz world.

Nearly fifty years later, Places and Spaces remains an important part of Byrd’s legacy, particularly for its influence on hip-hop, sampling, and generations of musicians who followed. For our 30th listening session, the album gives us an opportunity to think about movement — between genres, generations, and musical traditions — and the ways a record can create new spaces long after it was made.

Tickets now available in our bio. Doors open at 4:30 pm. Session starts at 5:00 pm
