ALL VINYL 60 minute mix of rare breaks and samples at 45 RPM. This is a cassette release exclusively at recordbreakin.com - Limited Edition only 200 copies

Since the beginnings of Hip Hop culture, the cassette tape has always been the formal way of sharing music via multiple generations of dubbing.  Even if the quality had degraded barely to audible levels, owning a cassette of your favorite live park jam, house party, radio mixes or even homemade pause recordings was gold.  Everything was done live and on the fly, nothing pre-programed and super clean, we wanted to hear the hiss of tape and the skip of records.  But as time progressed, so did the style of recordings.  From Grandmaster Flash rocking the quick mix and The Hypnotic 3 showcasing Philly’s #1, DJ Groove, the DJ evolved and so would their selections.  As digging got deeper and more obscure records became the focus, so would the craft of making these mixtapes as ‘cratestorians’ such as Japan’s King of Diggin, DJ Muro, Seattle Duo The Conmen and of course Philly’s archaeologist specialist, Soulman all put their unique signature on these classic recordings.

As time moved on and technology became cheap and an easy way for people to ‘cut and paste’ mixes together without doing any real deck work, very few of the newer generation mixes withstood the very short test of time and have since been forgotten.  With the addition of being able to make these mixes available for downloads and stream, the art of the mixtape had even further been devalued with ease of accessibility and no physical media which is why it made so much sense for The Nostalgia King, Skeme Richards to create such a mix in 2015 that pays homage to those who put in hours of digging and an equal amount of time laying the foundation for this genre.  Shifting Gears is strictly an analog recording using 2 turntables and mixer, a stack of 45’s acquired during his travels and then recorded directly to an old Fostex 4 track recorder that Skeme has owned since 1986.  DO NOT expect to hear perfect blends and transitions with fancy audio effects but DO expect to hear perfection in the choice of selections and it’s presentation.  DO NOT expect to hear high quality audio from a WAV or AIFF source, but DO expect to hear the warmth of vinyl and the slightest bit of tape hiss from a first generation copy.  Other than vinyl, the cassette tape is the most coveted

Sit back, relax and enjoy!
