Preservation Project - Masters Series : Three

If you are not up on Preservation Project record label out Texas get hip! They have a new release for their Masters Series. Lucky number 3 is “This Is Me” by Mark Bluford. A heavy slice of early 70s Psychedelic Deep Funk from the Bay Area. Hard to miss the massive wah-wah guitar leads, but the arrangement is pretty complex with piano, bass, and strings backing the earnest vocals.

There are breaks on both sides, parts one and two. The first break is a string break, very unique to a Funk record. But, somehow this fits for a Bay Area Funk record. The break in part two is one of the heaviest drum breaks no one has heard in 50 years.

Taking the release to another level, there is an upgrade option to choose a one of a kind, hand-painted sleeve by the legendary McBoing Boing. There are only 12 available so order it now!

Columbia Nights - Didn't Cha Know (Erykah Badu Cover)

November 20, 2015 Record Breakin' Music

As the 15th anniversary of Mama's Gun is here we've been reflecting on the years of inspiration E.Badu has shared with us. More than any of her other projects, Mama's Gun was a record we came of age to as we developed our musical, cultural, and political identities. As part of the "holy trinity" of Soulquarian albums released in the year 2000 (along with D'Angelo's Voodoo and Common's Like Water for Chocolate), this album's sound embodied a movement. When approaching Erykah's classic J Dilla production "Didn't Cha Know", we observed how her sound has evolved and pushed ourselves to do the same. Thank you, Ms. Badu.

RIP Dilla.

Columbia Nights - Heart Aglow

A few years ago we stumbled upon the inspiring sounds of I-Level, a short lived British group from the early 80s whose sound anticipates electrosoul by nearly three decades. Simultaneously tropical and urban, their work blends the emerging electronic musical tropes of the time with live instrumentation that resonated with our sensibilities. After keeping their sole album in rotation for a few years, we spent some time reimagining their unique approach with our own flavor.
