Black Jazz Records came along at a perfect time in my life and taught me so much about beautiful, rich and honest music made by some of our most cherished artists. I was lucky enough to find some original copies in Boston in the early 90’s, which proved pivotal to my voyage of discovery through jazz and fusion music from the 70’s. It’s not often that you get to select some of your favorite music on one of the most revered labels for someone you consider a role model and good friend. What an honor!

SOUND TRAVELER Series #34 ft. SvoLanski
The pandemic brought music enthusiasts closer together via the twitch stream website. Somehow i got to listen to Record Breakin Digs Jazz and Excursions there and instantly got caught by it. Being asked by DJ Junior / Record Breakin’ if i’d like to be part of the Sound Traveler series i felt honored and awarded. So here is my little contribution – a melange of old and new soulful, jazzy, funky records, that are with me for long or just came by. All in all tunes, that take me somewhere else every time i put them on the record player. I hope you enjoy the ride from laid back to body moving and back around again. A huge thanks to you listeners and to DJ Junior for making it possible!

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #32 FT. INKSWEL
"I guess with this mix I looked at the theme presented and the first thing that sprung to mind was the classic Mark Farina mixes which really influences me early on, I used to work in a convenience store 24 hours.. doing night shift and those mixes really educated me on finding a groove and riding with it. It was always about the beats for me from the start, I got into music through my dads love of clash, public enemy, prince and the likes and this shaped the way my ears heard things early on..this is I guess my take on all that together."

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #31 FT. DJ BEMI
I wanted this mix to reflect the fact that good music is a constant. I have much respect for all the foundation music from the last 30 years. But I think it’s important that it continues to evolve. I have always graduated to the underground and this selection reflects that. If I were to give it to label it would simply be underground soul. I met Junior of Record Breakin', before the label started, as a DJ. So I knew that the output would be consistent. The artist from the label that have graced my mixes throughout the years include; Columbia Nights, Dotmatic, I, Ced and Soia.

For the mix, I wanted to give plenty of shine to Seattle artists. Sunking, Terror/Cactus. Sassyblack, Shabazz Palaces. Select Level are all from the 206. The Philly to Seattle connection has been strong for a long time going back to Digable Planets. The rest of the mix is rounded out by tunes new and old that I've been digging in 2019.

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #29 FT. BRUCE PHILLIPS
Whenever I sit down to put together a mix, I like presenting it like an audio movie - if you will - telling a story out of many different elements. The goal is to highlight the emotional quality of the individual songs and to use those feelings as building blocks towards the whole. Whether the songs have lyrics or not, it’s the feeling of which we can’t put into words that pushes the mix forward, hopefully touching your soul, and helping you to gain a greater sense of humanity through this beautiful art form. Heavy on Jazz influences, there are also light notes of Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, House, Funk, & Hip Hop grooves sprinkled throughout. Enjoy!

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #27 FT. DJ RAHDU (BAMALOVESOUL)
I feel whenever they are behind the turntables, it should be the DJ's desire for the crowd to sound travel, to literally be taken on a musical journey. Directing their attention to awesome treats and helping them discover cuts never considered all while keeping the flock away from wack jams like a glorified tour guide should be the DJ's objective. Nevertheless, it was my delight to put this together. I grabbed all the joints I obtained in Oct & Nov and condensed them all into what you’re (hopefully) listening to now. So, this is like a little time traveling as well, eh? A few older joints (Little Beaver) slid in the mix as well, but I digress.
I believe my entry in this great series provides you the chance to chill, dance, groove, reminisce, fonk and more all within a 1 hour timeframe. To be honest, while putting this together I found a lot of songs that have become favorites, and I hope you’ll listen and find some favorites as well. I think one of my strong suits is weaving genres together while retaining a cohesive groove, which I feel is important when creating a mix. Hopefully you’ll feel the same and ride this one for the full trip. Get your dose of Jazz, Hip Hop, soul, and everything in between & ENJOY – Rahdu

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #26 FT. MO MANLEY
It’s late July, 2017,and I’m walking up Kingsland Road in London’s East End on a Saturday morning. I’m fuzzy from jet lag and a seven-hour gig from the night before; the sun is surprisingly bright and people are talking fast. Where the hell am I? Traveling to another part of the world within a day can make you question if anything is really real. My legs are jelly.
I take a left onto narrow Bradbury, down a block and see the small storefront of Eldica Records, a spot recommended by a friend the day before. Boxes of 45s, nag champa, and a woman named Beverly are inside. I pull up a box marked “Rare Caribbean” and start flipping through the sevens, feeling myself surfacing into the day. Familiar territory, a bit of grounding. Stuck in the middle of the rares is, oddly, a copy of RBMB’s Big Pimp Jones “Rigor Mortis” 7”. I text a pic of it back to Junior in Philly. Suddenly distances don’t feel so large.
This is sixty minutes of records played live—some new, some not, all on 7” except for one—that have been keeping me company all summer long, through all kinds of transitions. Here’s to you keeping your rhythm in whatever you’re moving through, too—wherever you are.
- - -
ps I also realized while making this that, through this thing called music, I’ve gotten to know (and, in some cases, work with) many of the artists on this mix, which is a really cool thing to have happen. A huge thank you to all of the artists here for making the world seem closer.

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #24 FT. DJ AFRODJIAK
I’ve been traveling and I’ve been inspired. I’ve been inspired by the sounds that move us, literally. I’m curious about how music assists our daily functions. What do you listen to while you work? What do you listen to while you work out? Make love? Draw? Cook? And what can you hear that interrupts that activity and causes you to actively tweak your aural senses?
I am hoping this mix does that. I hope it is like the movie you watch and love the first time; then watch again only to find yourself stopping to notice finer details you may have missed the first time around. I’m hoping it becomes the soundtrack to a few of your daily tasks. I’m hoping it is rediscovered again and again. Much respect to you & to Record Breakin’. - @afrodjiak

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #20 FT. Gabriel Jermaine Vanlandingham-Dunn
Recently, I was asked by my dear friend Junior to do a mix for Record Breakin' Music. I'm honored to have known this cat for about a decade, and even more so to provide a few tunes that mean a lot to me. Inspired by David Adams' artwork for the Dali 7" (included here), I pulled out a few pieces from my personal collection that remind me of parks. As it goes, most of these tunes have gotten some serious play while people watching, meditating, and meeting good folk in large, green public spaces. There are some funky jawns, happy jawns, sad jawns, loud jawns, and quiet jawns, but all of these jawns are ones I hold near and dear, for one reason or another. No Logic and no reissues, just wax played at the tempo it was supposed to be enjoyed at.
I hope it moves you.
Best,
Gabriel Jermaine Vanlandingham-Dunn

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #15 FT. HOT16
I've been following Record Breakin' for a while now. A few years back, I was able to meet Junior briefly in Portland while djing. So when he hit me up to contribute I was ecstatic! The intent was to provide some material(blends, exclusives, unreleased tracks) that aren't available anywhere else. Some of the artists are well known in our circle and some are relatively new. Also hopefully I'm introducing you to some of these tracks. Additionally my "production mind" has been slipping into my mix style. So lots of things are overlapping. Instruments are being reorganized and repeated and blended with instruments from other songs. It's almost like a live remix. At times there are 3 songs playing at once! So with that said, it is my pleasure to present some of my favorite tracks from 2015 for the Sound Traveler mix series. - Hot16

Columbia Nights - Didn't Cha Know (Erykah Badu Cover)
As the 15th anniversary of Mama's Gun is here we've been reflecting on the years of inspiration E.Badu has shared with us. More than any of her other projects, Mama's Gun was a record we came of age to as we developed our musical, cultural, and political identities. As part of the "holy trinity" of Soulquarian albums released in the year 2000 (along with D'Angelo's Voodoo and Common's Like Water for Chocolate), this album's sound embodied a movement. When approaching Erykah's classic J Dilla production "Didn't Cha Know", we observed how her sound has evolved and pushed ourselves to do the same. Thank you, Ms. Badu.
RIP Dilla.
