Record Breakin' Music Favorite Releases of 2024

January 20, 2025 Record Breakin' Music

Who says there is no new good music?

This is the sixth year I have put together this list of most of my favorite releases.  This is also my MOST extensive list with 240 releases (music and a few magazines) covering all different genres in music. I say “most” because I always end up leaving a few off. Not on purpose, honestly the release slipped my mind and then I scream “How could I forget about this…or that!”  Nevertheless, music is a big part of my life.  I listen to a ton of music. Some I bought and others have been sent to me. (Now is probably a good time to say THANK YOU to all the labels and artist that have sent me promos. It is MUCH APPRECIATED but does not influence if they made the list or not. Good music is good music.)

Anyway, if you listen to my weekly radio show Eavesdrop Radio [Fridays on 91.7FM from 6-9PM (EST) www.wkdu.org] that I co-host with lil' dave this list isn't really a surprise. This list is in no particular order but does reflect releases I went back to over and over throughout the year. It's great that so many of these releases came out on vinyl and some even on cassette. I encourage you to click on the artwork to find out more about these projects and support their music.

I wish you all the best for the New Year and look forward to hearing more amazing music in 2025. I know Record Breakin' Music has some tricks up their sleeves. Thank you to the all the artists on this list and the labels for releasing this music that has been our soundtrack for the past year and years to come!

PEACE & LOVE

50th Anniversary of WKDU!

July 15, 2021 Record Breakin' Music
WKDU_Turns_50.png

Welcome to the 50th Anniversary of WKDU!

July 17th, 2021 will mark the 50th anniversary of Drexel University’s free format, non-commercial radio WKDU Philadelphia 91.7 FM. On that day, WKDU began broadcasting at just 10 watts on the FM dial from high atop Van Rensselaer Hall. Throughout its existence, the student-operated radio station has remained a prominent source of diverse programming that seeks to provide a platform to artists and community members that would otherwise be left unheard. Now we broadcast at 800 watts!

The station’s longevity and the continued growth of our community has ultimately depended on the knowledge and experience passed down from one generation of students to the next. For decades, WKDU student staff members have drawn from the experience of their predecessors while incorporating their own visionary take on college radio. To celebrate this landmark milestone of the experience that WKDU has provided us all, we will honor current and past WKDU DJs for our 50th birthday celebration and raise funds for a significant technological infrastructure upgrade that will ensure 50 more years of the WKDU experience.

Important Dates

  • Saturday, July 10th: Fundraiser kick-off!

  • Sunday, July 11th: The Black Experience in Music (all day programming)

  • Monday, July 12th: Zine Reissue Release!

  • Tuesday, July 13th: Compilation Album Release!

  • Wednesday, July 14th: Merch Release!

  • Thursday, July 15th through Saturday, July 17th: On-Air Alumni Marathon

  • Saturday, July 17th (our actual birthday!): Outdoor Bash @ Drexel Park from 2-8PM

    • We'll have archival displays of old posters and flyers, blasting WKDU on the speakers, a meet & greet with plenty of past and present WKDU DJs, and more! Open to all past/present WKDU members AND listeners!

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES FT. MILES BONNY

August 4, 2015 Record Breakin' Music

Sound Traveler Series #11 ft. Miles Bonny by Recordbreakin on Mixcloud

Miles Bonny (@milesbonny)

Every week in the high desert of New Mexico I DJ at a raw and large space called Taos Mesa Brewing. It sits just on the south end of a vast mesa which is home to the Earthships, as well as the beautiful Rio Grande Gorge and many mesa dwellers living a simple and free life in various structures, buses, and other structures that fit their needs and desires. Its a wild place and I am free to play what I want to hear and share. In this case, on this day, as the unusually sunny winter warmth comes and goes, I was inside of the Earthship Ampitheater, outside amid sun, beer, food, friends, and a need to share some soulful sounds influenced by dj culture, my youth around NYC, and record digging with this high and dry desert community. Bang on.

Base FM Auckland 107.3FM Tune of the Week: Dali

October 15, 2014 Record Breakin' Music

TURN IT UP: LOCAL TUNE OF THE WEEK

DALI ‘The Sound’

Dali is a new international collaboration between vocalist Lisa Preston(Wellington, NZ) and beatmaker Lil’dave (Philadelphia, US). They’ve just dropped an EP on Record Breakin.

Lisa Preston (aka LP) hails from New Zealand and is part of the extended Record Breakin’ family, through her collaborations with Sir Froderick and Dotmatic.  She first came to the attention of Record Breakin through her collaboration with UK producer K15 and the release of their ep “A New Path”.

Known for her lush harmonies and love of layers, she has joined forces with producers from New Zealand and abroad to create a variety of timeless blends, each one laced with her unique style of soul.  She has worked with producers K15, Jellphonic, Bluevibe Studio, Cy Tru, Weedy (40 Winks) , Onur Engin, Lord Jackson, Wehkah, Nigel One & Indigo Pyramid, ClassicBeatz, Benny Tones, Dotmatic, Sir Froderick and Paddy Fred, and has featured on tracks released through much respected labels Record Breakin’ Philadelphia, Wonderful Noise Japan, Tokyo Dawn Germany, 4Lux Netherlands, BBE UK and Laidback Belgium.

Lil’dave is a Philadelphia-based audio tastemaker who has made a name for himself by exposing people to soulful music in all it’s forms.  As a DJ, he can easily whip the most mainstream crowd into a frenzy, but he is at his best when he digs deep into his crates for funky grooves, broken boogie, and thumping bass.

When it comes to making music, lil’dave’s productions draw from his hiphop roots, as well as his love of house, afrobeat, uk garage, salsa, jazz, synthesizers, and soul.  He has released music as lil’dave, Illvibe Collective, and under his electronic alias, Osage, for record labels such as Record Breakin’ Music, Soulspazm, BBE Records, Young Robots, Bastard Jazz, Luvbug, Exadoria and Swedish Brandy.

In his relationship with the Record Breakin’ Music label he wears many hats, such as recording artist, remixer, artist development advisor, and graphic designer.  He has worked with and remixed a diverse range of artists such as Selah Sue, J Cole, RJD2’s Icebird project, Lady Alma Ryat, Apt One, Joy Jones, Captain Planet, John Robinson, Foremost Poets, Laura Mvula, and more.
