Aaron ‘AB’ Abernathy - Now A Days (Columbia Nights Remix )

July 1, 2016 Record Breakin' Music

"It’s been some months since the last time we heard from DMV trio Columbia Nights, but they return today and make it clear their remix game is still A-1. They continue the celebration of Black Music Month with this beautiful remix of the homie Aaron ‘AB’ Abernathy’s “Now A Days.” They couldn’t have picked a better and more timely track to remix as this. The song features AB soulfully and emotionally singing of the plight of black people in this country of ours. The sad truth being that this song sounds like something that would apply to the times of the Civil Rights Movement, but in reality is a very accurate depiction of what’s going on in America in 2016. Listen to the Columbia Nights remix, below, and look for more music on the way as they’re currently working on a new project." - Okayplayer.com

It's amazing to us when we hear people say there is no good music coming out. If you were living on a remote island or under a rock this may be the case. Nevertheless, in 2015 there were so many amazing projects that came out in 2015. We took a look at all the records we bought and ones that were sent to us as promos. Some you may have heard on our weekly Eavesdrop Radio show throughout the year. This listing is in no particular order but does reflect releases we went back to over and over again throughout the year. It's great that so many of these projects came out in vinyl and two on this list were released on cassette. We encourage you to click on the images, find out more about these artists and support their music.

We wish you all the best for the New Year and we look forward to hearing more amazing music in 2016. Thank you to the entire artists on this list and the labels for releasing music that has been our soundtrack for the year and years to come!

(YES, we know D'Angelo and the Vanguard came out in the 2014. However, it came out so late we really think of it as a 2015 release.)

Columbia Nights - Didn't Cha Know (Erykah Badu Cover)

November 20, 2015 Record Breakin' Music

As the 15th anniversary of Mama's Gun is here we've been reflecting on the years of inspiration E.Badu has shared with us. More than any of her other projects, Mama's Gun was a record we came of age to as we developed our musical, cultural, and political identities. As part of the "holy trinity" of Soulquarian albums released in the year 2000 (along with D'Angelo's Voodoo and Common's Like Water for Chocolate), this album's sound embodied a movement. When approaching Erykah's classic J Dilla production "Didn't Cha Know", we observed how her sound has evolved and pushed ourselves to do the same. Thank you, Ms. Badu.

RIP Dilla.

Columbia Nights - My Groove (feat. SassyBlack of THEESatisfaction)

February 17, 2015 Record Breakin' Music

Washed in an air of confident ease, @ColumbiaNights‘ new single “My Groove” is proof of the guaranteed great things that come to those who wait. A low-rpm R&B kaleidoscope of popping handclaps, airy chords and live bass, the track was composed by the D.C. area production crew-turned-band over the course of three years with the help of @THEESatisfaction.

“This tune was an early experiment,” keyboardist Hayling Price told Okayplayer, “and after we’d been building with [THEESatisfaciton members] Cat and Stas for a while, we shared a few ideas we’d been working on. Cat [aka SassyBlack] loved this and ended up writing to it during a writing retreat she was on. So the instrumental itself has evolved over the last couple years on and off, and we finally landed in an interesting place. We recorded this over time across our 3 home setups in DC.”

To spend three years on three and a half minutes may strike some as arduous, but “My Groove” benefits from Columbia Nights’ keen feel for rhythm and tone. The spacious approach that’s regularly heard on THEESatisfaction’s work is also clearly at work, seeping into small moments like its lush bridge and extended epilogue. “The theme is really about being balanced and confident in your own ‘groove,’ and staying rooted in that no matter world throws at you,” Hayling explained.

Columbia Nights plans to release a full-length LP before the year is out, but the word is “My Groove” won’t be found on that final tracklist. Rather than keep it in their personal archives, Hayling and co. chose to release it for the world to enjoy (a free download link is included on its Soundcloud page). The trio will support the ladies of THEESatisfaction at their upcoming album release show for EarthEE, their upcoming album on Subpop records. Expect to hear plenty more about that collaboration, as well as more as their own LP draws near. - WWW.OKAYPLAYER.COM

Columbia Nights live with King

August 8, 2014 Record Breakin' Music

KING

with Columbia Nights

Sat, August 9, 2014

7:00 pm

U Street Music Hall

Washington, DC

$15-20

Peace family,

We're pleased to share that we'll be opening for one of our favorite bands, critically acclaimed soul group KING, this Saturday night at U Street Music Hall. Tickets are available here.

The trio has been celebrated by the likes of Prince, ?uestlove and NPR; Ebony Magazine has called them "the next soul outfit to rock the crown." Indeed, they've been an inspiration to us since they first made waves in 2011, and we're thrilled to be sharing the stage with them.

We've prepared some new tunes for the set, and we'll be joined onstage by our frequent collaborator and special guest Vaughan Octavia on the strings. For a taste of the new live set, check out the Soul Bounce review of our recent NYC showcase.

See you Saturday.

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #2 FT. COLUMBIA NIGHTS

Sound Traveler series #2 ft. Columbia Nights by Recordbreakin on Mixcloud

Columbia Nights

"Every so often, we gather at BrotherSpanky's place with one purpose in mind: to absorb LP records. Along with a small group of friends, we fellowship over the history preserved in dusty grooves and liner notes. Usually these sessions become conversations about recording and musicianship that flow into the wee hours. As habit became tradition in our collective, the music shared during Vinyl Fridays began to influence our sound.

We invite you to join us for a journey through wax, as we explore records from our personal collections that inspire us and have influenced our forthcoming work. Keep digging,"

Columbia Nights - Heart Aglow

February 13, 2014 Record Breakin' Music
artworks-000070187516-zamx7x-t500x500.jpg

A few years ago we stumbled upon the inspiring sounds of I-Level, a short lived British group from the early 80s whose sound anticipates electrosoul by nearly three decades. Simultaneously tropical and urban, their work blends the emerging electronic musical tropes of the time with live instrumentation that resonated with our sensibilities. After keeping their sole album in rotation for a few years, we spent some time reimagining their unique approach with our own flavor.
