Episode 16 is part two of Keith's discussion with the three members of Columbia Nights - we talk music, the creative process and of course records and record diggin'. We had such a good time talking (and the interview went on so long), it's broken into two parts! Make sure to check out Part 1 as well.
THE VINYL EXAM : COLUMBIA NIGHTS Pt. 1
On Episode 12, Keith sits down with the three members of Columbia Nights to talk music, the creative process and of course records and record diggin'. They had such a good time talking (and the interview went on so long), it's broken into two parts!
The Vinyl Exam : Dj Junior
To jump off the LP portion of The Vinyl Exam, Keith talked with Junior, the head of Record Breakin' Music. The topics ranged from World Cup to TED talks to (of course) Junior’s favorite digging city. Junior couldn’t choose one album to talk about so we talked about two – albeit two with a commonality - production by the Mizell Brothers.
Listen to the audio to hear Junior’s thoughts on all the above things plus some conversation on Junior’s label (which, full disclosure, Keith's band Big Pimp Jones has released some music on).

“Dust & Grooves began as a labor of love but has become a worldwide phenomenon. Paz has gained access to the personal troves of well-known collectors from all over the globe, showcasing each collector as well as his or her collections.” – ABC News
Eilon Paz’s 416-page coffee-table book illuminates over 130 vinyl connoisseurs and their collections in the most intimate of environments— their record rooms. With a foreword by the RZA, compelling photographic essays are paired with in-depth interviews to illustrate what motivates record collectors to keep digging.
Readers get an up close and personal look at a variety of well-known vinyl champions as well as a glimpse into the collections of world-renowned and lesser-known DJs, producers, record dealers, and everyday enthusiasts. The book is divided into two main parts: the first features 250 full-page photos framed by captions and select quotes, while the second consists of 12 full-length interviews that delve deeper into collectors’ personal histories and vinyl troves.
It all started out several years ago as nothing more than a way for photographer Paz to engage in a personal project in his free time. Adrift in Brooklyn after emigrating from Israel, Paz—a record collector on the side—thought it might be fun to start taking photos of people whose record collections were both larger and weirder than his own. These portraits turned into the Dust & Grooves website, which quickly developed a global following that grew every time a new portrait was added to the mix. People all over the world seemed to dig not only the beauty of Eilon’s photos, but the interviews with the collectors—a motley, if generally charming, crew of non-violent obsessives who turned out to be at least as intriguing as the records they collected.
Unearthing the very soul of the vinyl community, his book will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers, from die-hard record enthusiasts to fans of pop culture, sharp photography, and music history.

Expect to hear an eclectic mix of SOULFUL music. That is essentially any genre we want as long as it's soulful (funk, jazz, boogie, hip hop, latin, afro beat, world vibes, etc.) We will be doing this with ALL VINYL.
Looking forward to seeing get down!

SOUND TRAVELER SERIES FT. SPINNERTY
"As Bob James alludes to in the little intro to this mix, these are some of the records that have been strewn around the timeline of my own life as a listener, maker, and lover of jazz music over the years. Jazz has taken many forms and evolutions - it's vibe is the common thread that pops up its head thru most of the records I find myself gravitating towards. In the spirit of the genre, this mix is improvised - relying on some ideas that have been floating around in my head along with a bit of luck!"

Sound Traveler series ft. Jon Oliver
Jon Oliver
"I was honored to be asked to do this mix, and humbled by the challenge. After all, it is Eavesdrop that inspired me to start my own radio show (The Main Ingredient on East Village Radio) where Record Breakin' releases are a staple in my playlists. After years of looking forward to Eavesdrop's globe-spanning playlists as a fan, it was hard to limit what I wanted to include on this. “Worthy of a Record Breakin' mix" is a high standard to uphold, and one that includes broad swaths of material, spanning time, space and genre. The initial list that I pulled was 287 songs long! In the end, although I wasn't able to contain myself to the hour format, I did manage to narrow it down to 26 songs from South Africa, Morocco, Russia, New Zealand, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, Germany, and The United Kingdom; as well as NYC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Nashville, The Bay, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. Louis and Washington, DC."

Record shopping in paradise: Hawaiian vinyl culture
Last summer, I had the pleasure to hang out with Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul while I was in Honolulu, Hawaii. Besides becoming a good friend he also is a connoisseur of Hawaiian soul records. He goes above and beyond in keeping the culture and scene alive and well. Take a look as he introduces us to the vinyl culture in Hawaii and five of his favorite Hawaiian soul records.
SOUND TRAVELER SERIES #2 FT. COLUMBIA NIGHTS
"Every so often, we gather at BrotherSpanky's place with one purpose in mind: to absorb LP records. Along with a small group of friends, we fellowship over the history preserved in dusty grooves and liner notes. Usually these sessions become conversations about recording and musicianship that flow into the wee hours. As habit became tradition in our collective, the music shared during Vinyl Fridays began to influence our sound.
We invite you to join us for a journey through wax, as we explore records from our personal collections that inspire us and have influenced our forthcoming work. Keep digging,"

Sound Traveler series #1 ft. DJ Skeme Richards
DJ Skeme Richards
Hot Peas & Butta | Rock Steady Crew
"For this first installment of Sound Traveler which is sure to be a long running series for Record Breakin’ Music, I decided to focus specifically on tunes that were given to me directly by artists and independent labels during my travels across the globe. Of course each selection comes directly from a vinyl source, after all Record Breakin’ is a label that understands the importance of pressing physical media so we wouldn’t do it any other way? In addition to those aforementioned I also decided to throw in a few cuts from some of my favorite albums that I have collected throughout the years. Genres include everything from Hip Hop to Jazz with a few Electronic touches and Radio Spots in between. And since everything was done with vinyl, it was also done in real time, no edits or corrections to flaws which give it an even more sense of authenticity.
Hopefully you will enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed making it and it’s an honor to be featured in this brand new series known as Sound Traveler."
