It's always an honor to be asked to do a guest mix. When Junior reached out from Record Breakin' to be included in the Sound Traveler mix series, I wanted to do something a bit different. Although I am primarily known for dusty 45s of the funk and soul kind, I am a huge music fan all around. Like Break Beat Lou always says: "Always A Student", and it's completely true. You can't have every record, know every artist, or say 'got it!" on every genre. You can learn something every day and make a go of it. That's what I do. I find out about one record or artist in a genre I didn't know much about and try to learn as much as I can about them just about every day. I am partial to funky music so that's what I tired to stay true to on this special mix. This mix itself is a bastion of music that is funky in their own way that I have discovered over the past years throughout the world. Whether it's a Turkish track by Baris Manco, introduced to me by the talented producer/ musician and a guy I call my friend, Alpman, who is making amazing music every day (and included on this mix as well) in Turkey under oppressive conditions, pre-disco gospel soul classics from David Mancuso's crates, African funk, mellow library music, French organ sleaze, the mighty Sun Ra, Brazilian gold from Greg Caz and Cultures of Soul, or mellow seaside disco sampled by Dilla, I tried to get on a different trip this time. I couldn't get away from my hip hop roots though, and had to include a track from Ultramagnetic and from the near perfect Wildflower record from The Avalanches feat. The Biz. I want my mixes to be as eclectic as they can be with that common denominator of the funky drummer on each. Every single track on this mix smacked me across the face the first time I heard it, and if you haven't heard some of these songs, I hope they do the same.
This mix was recorded all live in one take at Greenville Studios in Jersey City, NJ, There are imperfections, skips, drops, and everything else that can happen when you're live. I don't really believe in making a perfect mix, you only get one chance to do it live. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it. Thanks to the Record Breakin' family for including me in this series. Keep Diggin'!

Recently, I was asked by my dear friend Junior to do a mix for Record Breakin' Music. I'm honored to have known this cat for about a decade, and even more so to provide a few tunes that mean a lot to me. Inspired by David Adams' artwork for the Dali 7" (included here), I pulled out a few pieces from my personal collection that remind me of parks. As it goes, most of these tunes have gotten some serious play while people watching, meditating, and meeting good folk in large, green public spaces. There are some funky jawns, happy jawns, sad jawns, loud jawns, and quiet jawns, but all of these jawns are ones I hold near and dear, for one reason or another. No Logic and no reissues, just wax played at the tempo it was supposed to be enjoyed at.
I hope it moves you.
Best,
Gabriel Jermaine Vanlandingham-Dunn

Join Record Breakin' Music and Welcome To Soulville for the experience of Sound Travelers #18. Fatnice, acting as the pilot for Soulville Airlines, hosts this musical extravaganza while Blaak Tha 9th Man, the attendant, serves up some of the most prolific jazz sounds around. Come aboard, buckle up, and let Soulville fly your central nervous system to bliss.

Fatnice and Blaak Tha 9th Man are two of Philadelphia’s best-kept secrets. People really have no idea how deep their sonic rabbit hole goes. These guys got more talent in their pinky fingernails than many of your favorite pop stars have in their entire entourages. Yeah, I said that. Welcome To Soulville!

"It’s been some months since the last time we heard from DMV trio Columbia Nights, but they return today and make it clear their remix game is still A-1. They continue the celebration of Black Music Month with this beautiful remix of the homie Aaron ‘AB’ Abernathy’s “Now A Days.” They couldn’t have picked a better and more timely track to remix as this. The song features AB soulfully and emotionally singing of the plight of black people in this country of ours. The sad truth being that this song sounds like something that would apply to the times of the Civil Rights Movement, but in reality is a very accurate depiction of what’s going on in America in 2016. Listen to the Columbia Nights remix, below, and look for more music on the way as they’re currently working on a new project." - Okayplayer.com

"Travel is about the journey.
It's also about transience, imperfections, memory, emotions, celebration, desires, challenges, achievements, timing, movement, diversity and finding comfort in the unfamiliar. So many things invoked within the semantics of such a simple word.
In this session, I tried to capture some of what traveling means as applied to music. The process of creating this also drew many parallels of traveling- planning, experimenting and realizing it must finally drawing to a close and reentering our reality.
Thank you for coming on this trip with me."
Looking forward >>

I've been following Record Breakin' for a while now. A few years back, I was able to meet Junior briefly in Portland while djing. So when he hit me up to contribute I was ecstatic! The intent was to provide some material(blends, exclusives, unreleased tracks) that aren't available anywhere else. Some of the artists are well known in our circle and some are relatively new. Also hopefully I'm introducing you to some of these tracks. Additionally my "production mind" has been slipping into my mix style. So lots of things are overlapping. Instruments are being reorganized and repeated and blended with instruments from other songs. It's almost like a live remix. At times there are 3 songs playing at once! So with that said, it is my pleasure to present some of my favorite tracks from 2015 for the Sound Traveler mix series. - Hot16

When I was asked to be a part of the Sound Traveler series, I was honored because it allowed me become a part of something special with a roster of amazing DJ's that have contributed to the series. It also enabled me to curate a collection of tracks that I never get the chance to break out these days. My dj background is very hip-hop based along with a splash of turntablism, but growing up on classic soul and R&B plays a major role as well. This track selection best represents the influence that New York City has had on my DJ career, which is the grit and grime of the city mixed with the smooth grooves and vibes that make up the DNA of The Big Apple. I hope you all enjoy this mix as much as I did creating it. -

Every week in the high desert of New Mexico I DJ at a raw and large space called Taos Mesa Brewing. It sits just on the south end of a vast mesa which is home to the Earthships, as well as the beautiful Rio Grande Gorge and many mesa dwellers living a simple and free life in various structures, buses, and other structures that fit their needs and desires. Its a wild place and I am free to play what I want to hear and share. In this case, on this day, as the unusually sunny winter warmth comes and goes, I was inside of the Earthship Ampitheater, outside amid sun, beer, food, friends, and a need to share some soulful sounds influenced by dj culture, my youth around NYC, and record digging with this high and dry desert community. Bang on.

MoM is a family of DJs, producers, musicians and music enthusiasts who share a passion for the convergence of soul music and dancing. What began as a humble Monday night Motown & Soul party in San Francisco in 2009, has since exploded into a multi-city dance party across the states...

The artists featured on this mix are people I consider family. They're artists I will rep regardless of how much/little hype they have or which label they record for. Over the past few years many of them have also become my personal friends.
I'm immensely proud of the creative family that surrounds me: I hope this mix reflects that and puts you onto some folks you've been sleeping on!

With the end of Summer upon us, I thought I'd make a mix that sorta gives us a chance to reflect on the season and enjoy these last few beautiful warm sunsets. From rooftops, pools and porches all over the world, we've enjoyed the company of old friends, made new acquaintances, fell in love and had great food and drinks. I wanted to make a collective soundtrack for those moments we've enjoyed and also bid farewell to our favorite season of the year. The selections range from Jazz, Disco, Indie Soul and more. Let's raise our glasses and make one last toast to Summer. Cheers.

'A Sunday Mix'
In some cultures Sunday is considered the first day of the week, in others.. it is the week's seventh day and calls for rest. For me, Sunday has no numerical order… for me, Sunday is my self day. I can think on Sundays… stress free from day job worries. I can plan on Sundays..limitlessly without time restrictions. And most importantly, I can sound travel on Sundays. Whether it's aimlessly digging for records at a local flea market or catching up on a podcast I might of missed on Thursday night, Sunday is my most favorite day. I explore, create, reflect and decompress. This mix is 'A Sunday Mix' by @cuurlzzz

In the theme of sound traveling, for this installment of the Sound Traveler series I decided to pull some music I’m particularly fond of at the moment from a few different genres, including house, soul, boogie, hip-hop and jazz to name a few… Some songs are old and some are new. Some tracks are from vinyl and others are from digital sources. Some will be familiar and others may not be so familiar. Some may make you want to dance and others may make you want to chill out. For me personally, the common thread running through the songs on this mix is that they all have a lot of soul. I hope you’ll find them soulful as well, and that you’ll enjoy the mix wherever you are, doing whatever it is you’re doing. Dig the tunes and if you like what you hear, please look up the artists and support them however you can. Thanks for listening, and big thanks to Record Breakin’ Music for having me be a part of the Sound Traveler series! It’s an honor to be featured amongst so many talented folks. Peace…Personify
